About the Delusion

Who are we?… Why are we here?…

What is our purpose?…

We are not a mystery, and neither is our purpose or the purpose for this blog!

Armstrong Delusion is an online magazine published monthly (at no cost to you–and we won’t ask you for tithes and offerings later), with supplemental articles and special series posted on a weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly basis. We cover all aspects of the grand failure of Armstrongism, from refuting its doctrines to exposing its abuses among the various cults that have been and continue to be spawned from this frothing pit of lunacy.

Do you have lingering fears about Herbert’s prophecies? Our series, He Was Wrong! will help you put those anxieties to rest. Are you confused by the sophistry, doublespeak, and outright bad logic employed by these groups? We’ll expose a new trick every week in Friday Fallacy. Concerned with finding the “true church” among the quickly multiplying splinters? Our Cult of the Month feature will curb your enthusiasm and explain a few things to boot!

So much more awaits your voracious appetite for hard-hitting, fact-based boat-rocking here at Armstrong Delusion. So join us! All are welcome to read and comment, even Armstrong apologists and mad-dog defenders of the faith. The comment policy is wide open for your enlightenment…and entertainment.

  1. A Mrs. Robinson was a member of the PCG. Her husband had to wear a suit and tie during services. They argued so much about it,she got a divorce.

    • What is this, Armstrong-spam? Those look suspiciously like syntactically correct sentences, but humans usually have a point (did I just give most of us too much credit?). I’ll give “George James” a few more days to post a meaningful elaboration on his comment before trashing this exchange (unless I forget about it).

    • One older woman had cancer,in the last stages, She was told to get up and go to the Feast anyway, against the wishes of Her Doctor.. She went came back and died..

  2. I am thankful to know that Jesus died for me and has given me eternal life. It cost him a lot, but given to me FREELY, but I cannot understand why someone who knows this is tricked into believing that baloney of Armstrongism where you trade ALL THAT Christ has done for us, and what do you get? Legalism! Fear! Guilt! and empty pockets and no friends (at least the old ones you used to know….)

    • “I am thankful to know that Jesus died for me and has given me eternal life.”

You know no such thing; you believe it. Besides being technically incorrect, it is arrogant and presumptuous to claim you know something that no one can know–unless, of course, you can provide evidence for your claim. Now that would be something.

“I cannot understand why someone who knows this is tricked into believing that baloney of Armstrongism”

You sure do claim a lot of knowledge for someone who doesn’t understand. Why don’t you try reading more and asserting less? Some of us were born into “that baloney of Armstrongism” and some of us were born into that baloney of “orthodoxy”. Either way, it’s a lot of baloney. You’re just as deceived as any Armstrongist–you’ve simply found a more personally comfortable pasture in which to indulge your inner sheep. Every little lamb is looking for something, dear, and some of them want to be abused. Or, at least, they want to feel special and relevant and are willing to pay a high price for the privilege. Are you sure you’re so superior–or, indeed, even different? It doesn’t look that way from the outside, let me tell you. And isn’t hypocritical judgment one of the pet peeves of your blood cult savior (something about motes and beams, if I recall correctly)? I’d inform myself more if I were you, if only to avoid the appearance of being a petty judge.

      • SO GLAD YOU SAID WHAT YOU DID.. ITS ALL TRUE.. GOD WOULD NEVER PUT A FALLABLE MAN IN CHARGE OF PEOPLES SPIRITUAL LIVES SAYING WHO [ COULD ]MAKE IT.. AND [ NOT] MAKE IT ..CHRIST IS IN CHARGE.. NOT FLURRY.. BUT YOU NEVER HEAR MUCH ABOUT CHRIST ..THERE.. IT KING DAVID OR MR ARMSTRONG.. THATS ALL YOU HEAR ABOUT THERE..THE CHURCHES OF THE WORLD [AT LEAST MOST OF THEM ] HAD MOST OF IT RIGHT AFTER ALL ..WE ARE UNDER GRACE..GOD DOES NOT CONDEM US..NO WONDER THEY NEVER WANTED US TO ATTEND ANOTHER CHURCH.. WE WOULD HAVE FOUND OUT WE WERE”NT UNDER THERE AUTHORITY AFTER ALL.. ALL THOSE YEARS WASTED..LIVEING IN FEAR..THE WAY THEY TREAT THOSE PEOPLE IS CRIMINAL.. AND I CAN NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THE ..FBI ..HASNT LOOKED INTO THAT ORGANIZATION..

      • Just reading this now. You are a sad, angry little boy indeed. You evidently get your jollies by trashing someone else’s beliefs – primarily because you probably don’t have any of your own. Stupidity and ignorance on display, how wonderful….

      • You know, you’re right. I’m stupid and ignorant and I don’t have any beliefs and you’re a child molester. It’s easy to make baseless assertions about people you’ve never met. What’s hard is crafting valid arguments to support some proposition. That’s what we do here. If you can’t do that, then you’re welcome to fuck off. Also, ellipses have three dots, not four. One does not simply come onto Armstrong Delusion and use four-dotted ellipses. Douchebag.

      • LOL, alright, Debbie. You are hereby “removed” from my sight! Enjoy your life, my friend, and thank you for stopping by. (Be sure to unsubscribe, if you are a subscriber and do not wish to be notified of new posts!)

      • I AM TRYING TO GET PASSED MY NIGHTMARE THERE ,BUT IT DOESN’T MEAN I DON’T WANT TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOU.. GOOD LUCK MY DEAR FRIEND.. • Oh!!!! how right you are.. God bless you for saying it.. I left after being there for some time and found that what you just sait to be true..

    • THERE HAVE BEEN ARTICLES ABOUT ARMSTRONG..THAT WHEN HE DIED THEY FOUND BOOKS ABOUT BRAINWASHING IN THE BASEMENT OF HIS HOME..THIS IS WHAT HE BASED HIS CHURCH ON CONTROLLING PEOPLE FOR HIS OWN USE..HE ALSO WENT TO COMUNIST GATHERINGS THERE ARE DOCUMENTS TO PROVE IT..ALL HE DID WAS TO..TAKE PARTS OF DOCTRINES OF OTHER CHURCHS. [SEVEN ADVENTEST ] AND OTHER SIMALIAR ONES…. SCRAMBLE THEM UP AS HIS OWN..AND SAY GOD GAVE THEM TO HIM..HE PLEGERAIZED MOST OF THE BOOKS HE WROTE FOR WORD FOR WORD..THIS TO CAN BE PROVEN.. SO .. NO I DONT THINK HE KNEW ANYTHING.. ONLY WHAT OTHERS WROTE BEFORE HIM..HE TOOK AS IS OWN.. AT THE TIME THERE WAS NO INTERNET.. AND AS HE ONCE SAID ALL WE PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH ARE IS POOR DUMB SHEEP…. WELL MR ARMSTRONG WE ARENT SO DUMB NOW.. WE FOUND YOU OUT…!!!!

      • “AND AS HE ONCE SAID ALL WE PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH ARE IS POOR DUMB SHEEP…. WELL MR ARMSTRONG WE ARENT SO DUMB NOW.. WE FOUND YOU OUT…!!!!”

A fine sentiment marred only by the use of all-caps.

Debbie, you are perhaps new to this thing we call the Internet and its forms of etiquette. There is one rule of etiquette that I will enforce here. Just like in a real life conversation you would be considered rude or daft or both to go around shouting everything you say, in forums such as this one, all caps is considered rude and makes you look like someone who is mentally challenged. Please correct your keyboard settings accordingly if you wish for your comments to survive. Thank you for your cooperation.

    • Believe ,Me it isnt worth it to stay for Your Friends. Their brain washed…..They will turn you in in a minute.. Gastopo,,Style.. If they think they can make points with The Ministers..

    • To Anonymous, I just wondered if you were ever in The Church..I am not angry if you were or not ..,Just wondered if you attend anywhere at another Church now.?. and where that might be..Debbie

  3. A very worthy blog. All people who have been subject to – or even raised within – religious doctrines need a support community as they undergo the slow process of making rational sense of the world. I’m delighted you’re helping this particular community (which, thankfully, I have never been caught up in).

    • Thanks for the compliments, Robin. The feeling is mutual, to be sure. I came across your blog as a result of my abiding interest in (and disgust for) the cult of Christianity as it originally was before it recruited its infamous Imperial booster, Constantine. Of course, it got worse from there before it got better (as it was slowly tamed by secular society). I also happen to be addicted to Roman history. I just learned the other day about a couple rivals at Constantinople called Pulcheria and Eudocia, who figured prominently in the history of the Roman church. It’s a compelling and dramatic story, even if it might be a bit embellished here and there. Speaking of compelling, good luck with your novel, by the way!

  4. i am haveing a hard time trying to figure out if this sight is for or against This Cult.. i was part and have regreted it ever sence.. stay away from This Church..Iit means nothing but heartack to people .. i really hate to see people join to have to find this out.. i wish some would take the hint after they see what is said about it by those of us who have lived the nightmare and left..You will regreat being apart of this So Called Church.. They will rip your family appart in ways it can never be put back together again…Iif you know whats good for you stay far away..

  5. this *church* has brainwashed my family members until they have become shells of their former selves. i am heartsick over the loss of my mother, stepfather and grandmother. i wish there were a way i could convince them that in their driving need to be a part of the elite ones, they have sacrificed traditions, memories and most of all time with the ones who truly love them…not the leaders of this nazi-esque, so-called church.
it’s like trying to convince an alcoholic to stop drinking…

  6. DEAR ZOEGIRL454…I am so sorry to hear about your relatives.. Its true you really do loose them.. They only stay amoung there selves.. They are told other people just dont matter and are decieved of satan in there thinking. As if they themselves were in some pure state!!!. I have never seen a more evil bunch…. There really little you can do … but pray..they keep you through a form of brainwahing..They turn in each other in to make the Ministers think they are close to God… They have people litterly listening in in conversations at the dinners to report any thinking they dont approve of.. You live in fear of just being human.. and there is no forgiveness.. ..and once you show signs of thinking for yourself.. Your out.!!!. Not many will do that…. They want no one that thinks for their self.. They do your thinking for you.. Most stay becouse they tell them there is a…… [place of safety ] Where they alone will escape too when war comes..which is un-true..There is no place like that.. THE PLACE OF SAFTY was for The Old Testement only. They love Power and Money..and makeing others Fear…. Perhaps Your relTtives will do something or say something and get put out.. I know its a fearfull thing for them for that to happen.. but it is the first steps of God getting them out of there ..littlle by little they return to there former selves when out of their controll.. ..When I left it was a fearfull time.. but there were those around me that pulled me back into life..and I am ever so greatfull.. Also there is a place on The Internet called [ESN].. If you get on there there is a lot of hope and stories of others who were put out or left..There is a some encouragement there..If you wish to contact My Personal e-mail it is..[homebody@comcast.net ].. Feel free to contact me….and I wish you well … DEBBIE

  7. thanks for the support, debbie. try to take it easy on her casey, she’s only trying to help. we all have different ways, and some of us are just more eccentric. NBD.

now, i have some questions about all of this…it is only over the last month that i have come to realize some the disturbing truth about it. maybe someone out there can help me?
so, here’s what i need to know:
what does it mean to become a deacon in this organization? where does that place you (power-wise) in the *church*? at what cost (financially and physically) do you become a deacon? am i correct in assuming that it will only make it that much more difficult for someone to exit once they become a deacon?
My stepfather has been invited, for lack of a better word, to become a deacon. the 3 of them left for *headquarters* (which i find absolutely ridiculous), yesterday for some sort of graduation and grand ball. they are eating this crap up. all excited over the attention and lavishness of the whole scenario.
i do not have a lot of details b/c i was unaware of exactly how dangerous this organization is until recently. i told my family that i was happy that they had found a church they felt was right for them, but i wasn’t interested in being a part of it. i turned my head to things, and now i am finding out about all the bizarre practices, which seem like they would send up a red flag to anyone, but somehow, through some sick brainwashing, they get their hooks into kind, honest people like my family and promise them god knows what in exchange for their souls. my family doesn’t know how i feel at this point. i feel like i have let them down by not preventing them from getting in so deep. i am getting over that feeling and am now feeling strongly about trying to expose this bogus garbage for what it really is…but i am afraid that they are so sucked in that they have been programmed on how to respond to any argument i could make against it.
as you can probably tell, i am in the sad/angry/desperate portion of processing all of this information and would really love to see david c pack and the rest of his cohorts, strung up by their balls atop the ambassador college chapel (IF there is one) and hear them beg for forgiveness from all of the families they have harmed.
unfortunately, i think a portion of the $$$ these slimebags rape off of their *deciples* is used to grease the palms of local government, so they can continue to build their sick little commune of lies without question. i would love nothing more than to find a way to put them out of business. i abhor a fraud, but this has taken the word to an all new meaning for me. thanks for letting me rant….

    • As the owner of this blog, I welcome your rants–so long as you don’t use all caps (and capitalizing the first letter of your sentences would be nice too–just makes things easier on the reader, you know).

Now for your question. I will be answering this according to my own limited knowledge and experience with the corridors of power within PCG, and my associates may correct and add to what I have to say.

Deacons in these CoG cults have little or no real authority. They are basically the gofers for the local elder(s) and ministers. They do the grunt work and make no decisions. That said, it is no trouble for them to leave the organization. It isn’t like the Mob, or anything. The only difficulty is what is true for anyone with a family inside. That complicates things because the other members of the family have their own minds to make up (not that this should matter to a true believer deacon, who is the “man of the house” and the final say in all such matters).

“i feel like i have let them down by not preventing them from getting in so deep.”

I agree with that feeling. It is good to nip these kinds of notions in the bud before they become full on delusions. Now you have a real battle before you if you feel strongly enough to do what it takes. You must be prepared for disappointment. People come to identify their egos with their beliefs and that makes them a real bitch to shake–even if you have the finest arguments at your disposal. Sometimes you just have to let them figure it out for themselves–but that doesn’t mean you don’t plant seeds of doubt at every opportunity.

The other obstacle you will be up against is that these cults encourage their sheep to cut off contact with family that is antagonistic toward the teachings or the organization. They will say you are a pawn of Satan, that you have demons. At the very least, you will be labeled a false Christian (assuming you are Christian) or a filthy atheist (and who cares what they have to say?)–and that’s if you behave yourself. If you try to de-convert them, you will be made out to be an enemy. And you should be. It’s a tough row to hoe and I don’t envy you–because I was there once.

Gladly all my siblings are pretty smart and figured things out for themselves, because I sure as hell couldn’t touch them once I was excommunicated. You might do better, though. You have one advantage over someone like me: you come from the outside–you aren’t a disgruntled former member–and so you aren’t assumed to be a tool of the Devil in the grip of a rebellious and demonic urge to destroy the church. There is a chance they might listen to some things you have to say–if you approach the subject carefully.

Now, here is where I must leave off advising you, since I am not the expert on approaching a subject carefully. I don’t give a shit. I tell it like it is. Tact is something I find irksome when it comes to these idiotic morons and their stupid, delusional beliefs. For some advice on strategic communication, watch this…

Thanks for stopping by. And, hey, by the way–why not read a few articles while you’re here. They might help you understand what you’re up against at least. Good luck, sincerely. You’re going to need it. I’ll let my co-conspirators join in now, if they so choose.

  8. Please tell me who is funding that Armstrong library.org, I would like to know if it is these Armstrong groups still out there! These need to be banned because of all the brainwashing control he had on followers this site is fueling the fire in the followers that can’t see the wrong in following this dead man’s belief’s!

    • What site are you referring to, specifically? The site at armstrongismlibrary.com is decidedly anti-Armstrong. There is no armstronglibrary.org and armstronglibraries.org directs to a public library site for the county of Armstrong in Pennsylvania. There is a site called Armstrong Searchable Library, but its URL is herbert-armstrong.org. This site doesn’t contain any original content as far as I know–it’s just an archive of church literature, and therefore a useful resource for all of us.

Could the problem be a failure at reading comprehension on your part?

  9. “However, I will try my best to heed your sage advice on planting seeds of positivity, love and memories.”

LOL, for my part, I said seeds of doubt! Those other things are nice, but I’m afraid they won’t have much of an effect in getting them to see the light (although it will be good to have these things in place for when they break free–knowing that you were a force for positive emotional input all along, instead of merely antagonistic, will make it easier for them to admit they’ve been wrong–even to themselves). Part of the cult indoctrination involves a devaluing of sentimentality over ideological substance. These are people who will be increasingly enthusiastic about an abstract value called “the Truth”, and dismissive of (indeed, resistant to) considerations of “the heart”, which they consider “deceitful above all things.”* In other words, you should do both, I think: couple your positive coaxing (showing yourself and the outside world in a positive light) with a planting of doubts about the cult and its ideologies.

Anyway, again, good luck, and thanks for the compliments. I hope you will find the time to read some of our articles, as the information covered therein should be helpful in the endeavor to plant doubts.

*(This is not a bad way to be, in actual fact, so long as one understands the proper way of discerning truth from falsehood–i.e., using critical thinking and respecting objective facts, instead of allowing oneself to be cast about by cognitive biases and fallacious reasoning. The cultists are hypocrites in this regard, claiming to be proponents of truth and resistant to “the heart’s” deceptive tug. It is the height of ridiculous irony when such incompetents praise themselves for doing the very things they are failing to do so spectacularly. This is something they will recognize if they ever break free of the spell of “the heart” they are under.)

  10. All I can say is I wished that some one would have the [FBI} look into This Group..It destorys lives..They talk you into giveing a herendes amount of money to them ..to buy your way into The Place of Safety. They tell you, that God judges You by how much You give to His Work..[Which there is no place.like that promised to anyone].. it was for the Jews of The Old Testement… But in all actually there spending it on large homes and beautiful things for The Temple..plus giveing thereself generouse bonuses. for all there SO CALLED.. good work ].Most stay for stay becouse there afraid to leave….as it sure couldnt be for the good and kind way they are treated there..Most stay becouse of The Place of Saftey they think there promised If they stay and pay,….People are treated terrable there.. I was there for years.. I saw how people were treated there.. One poor trusting soul had a Young Grandaughter that was being molested by the Father [ Not in the Church].. but the courts make the little one go on visitations anyway….The Grandmother comes to Church and asks for prayers…to free Her little Grandaughter from the awful experience She had to bare.. The Minister told Her to stop bringing Her trashy problems up there.. and to stop asking people for prayers.. !!!!..This is the kind of place it is …When we still attended our car broke down one time and We were getting it fixed..We would have only missed a week.. the Minister insisted that My Husband ride with a well known flirt that was after any man, includeing My Husband..He refused to ride with Her, as I was to be left home durring this week ..and only He was only to ride with Her…We had just married and She was wanting to date Him while He was dateing Me… Anyone in there right mind would realize this wasn”t a good idea.. rideing alone with someone that has problem like that. was just asking for problems. When He refused to ride to Church withr Her.. Which was something any good Christian would do.. He was threatened to be put out.. Now a week home from Church..or a possible tempt of adultry [on her part]… Which would a real Minister choose…?.. Following orders to them is more important than keeping The Comandments….There was a Friend that My Husband and I knew…He had a Wife He adored She was a lovely person. They [The Ministers] listen to some one that made a wild accusation about Her .. With no chance to deney ,explain They told her She was put out.. She was so worried over this She became Ill and died..With in the same month of Her death ..They insisted He marry some one that they chose for Him…He said NO!!!..They put him out becouse of that..These things I am telling You are not even the worst of it.. Theres so much more. They move You and Your life around like a chess board. Make life decisions that are only for you to make…. Never haveing any regreat about what happens to the people they destroy.. Some one needs to put a stop to this place and soon before it turns into another JIM JONES..

    • Debbie, does it have to be a certain group though? A family member of mind has all the HWA books and materials and says he’s following all these teachings on his own !!! But on Saturday he closes off not a room get’s on a suit coat and connects not these sermons. The who’s, what, where’s, of this to me is unknown. He is very secretive and compulsively lies. Pretty amazing, all he does is bow down on selective area rugs praying and reading a bible or a Armstrong book. He has slowly taken over total domain over the bottom level of the house for his own. His extremely deceptive and suspicious. It is nothing but continuous denial from him, lying is no problem for him. So any information would be appreciated. How can someone connect into Saturday sermons if they don’t belong to a certain group? and you can forget these Holy Day’s… I even had a tent built in the middle of the ”Family” room.{ P.S. In anyway I can help with getting the FBI involved I would gladly join this crusade to stop this mass destruction of human life’s}.

      • Sorry for the typo-errors, should read, closes off into a room, puts on a suit jacket and connects into these sermons….

  11. If anyone wants there people out try this.. !!! Ask them about the Church and ask what they like about the Church. Then ask them if there is anything they dont like..What ever they say.. Pretend to be very concerned about it.. Tell them Mr flurry would love to hear about it, to straighten things out…I will give you the address and phone number.. He will listen to [no one]… No matter how mater how long one has been in the Church or their position ..He puts every one out that contacts him.. I just got two of My friends out that way.. They now see the light..and believe Me its like seeing the sun.. They see him for what He is.. When they told him about a important matter, that has been going on in an area.. He put them out. [ He kills the messanger ,every time,So to speek..]. I have heard they have Guards at the outside door of the Church also by The Bathroom Door.and,. The time is written down when You go in and when You come out of the Bathroom..If you stay in there too long according to them.. Your name is sent to flurry.. They blacken the windows out now ,durring services, to get Your Total Attention. They say its really dark in there. So I wonder when the koolaide is comming.!!!!.Here is the address:Gearld Flurry..Po Box-1787….Edmond ,OK 73084-1787.. If enyone wants The Phone Number, I would rather hand that out privately..Just hit reply: Debbie.. and give Me Your Private e-mail address.. I wont keep your e-mail.. and if You put it on the sight thats ok. I just would rather not..

  12. Your Dad was one of the decent ones.. There were a few that, believed and tried to help the People.. But if they tried to help too much they were put out.. Why did your Dad leave….??? Did I see You on face book? I tried to get a hold of you there once but the sight was blocked..

  13. What about Feuerbach’s interpretation of Christianity? What about Derkheim’s analysis of the role of religion in society? What does “God” mean? How can generations of ancient humans speak on the human condition in a scientific way when the language of science is so new? What about allegory and metaphor? What about the very real crisis of capitalism and its struggle with socialism? And Armstrong’s experience of depression and war as a devastated capitalist with a newfound skepticism of the system? These are the questions that are much more interesting to me than simple attacks on religious dogma. What various religions are doing and how they exist in opposition to various elements of the broader society is much more relevant than the truth of falsity of the literal interpretation of their myths. These questions do not deny criticism of systems of abuse and control. But to me, that focus usually ends up obscuring the entire point of particular religious movements entirely. Just about every human interaction is tainted with abuse and control (including hostility and verbal abuse frequently seen on internet forums).

    • What is your point, besides name-dropping, I mean? And as for the relevance of the truth value of this particular belief system, relevant to what? I could wax as eloquent as you like on the various relevancies, but the purpose of this site is to expose the falsehood that is Armstrongism in the light of science, philosophy, and history. In that context (the only one I care about here), the truth or falsity of the teachings is *all* that’s relevant.

    • Oh, wait. I think I remember you. You have a hard-on for a particular angle on Armstrongism I figured out over a decade ago (when I was a budding cultist), without your aid somehow–and yet for some reason you felt the urge to explain it to me as though I didn’t understand it. The funny thing is you get the interpretation wrong, likely because of your misguided passion for far leftist narratives. And if I remember right, you were also the one who tried to persuade me that all males are secretly homosexual and that heterosexuality is a social construct–because masturbation! LOL Jeffrey Vanek, you are a loon.

  14. There is a “ritual of steel” man must go through to see himself away from God. Going thru God’s consuming fire is this what i call ritual of steel. Like gold is refined so will man be to be spiritually born. I too fell for Amstrongnism while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Was even Court-Martial for keeping the Sabbath….You have to ask yourself “What is God doing with us” as he work his strange work on the earth.

I invite you to come out of the delusion completely.
